An overview of the Bond Solon Expert Witness Conference 2024
On Friday, 8th November 2024, I attended the Bond Solon Expert Witness Conference in person at the prestigious Church House in Westminster, London. Renowned as the leading event for expert witnesses, the conference delivered a packed agenda of insightful discussions, practical guidance, and invaluable networking opportunities.
Setting the Stage
The day began with a warm welcome from Mark Solon, the founder of Bond Solon, who set the tone for a day filled with learning and collaboration. Delegates were greeted with opportunities to explore an exhibition area and meet key players in the expert witness community.
Morning Highlights
The conference opened with a series of thought-provoking presentations:
Addressing Ethical Challenges:
Paul Philip, Chief Executive of the Solicitors Regulation Authority, tackled the ethical dilemmas faced by expert witnesses when dealing with instructing solicitors. From fee disputes to undue pressure, his session shed light on how the SRA can support experts navigating these challenges. Paul’s extensive experience as the former Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officer at the General Medical Council (GMC) is truly impressive. His insights into the complexities of professional regulation and ethical challenges make him someone I would greatly value having a professional coffee with.
Building Stronger Relationships with Barristers:
Sam Townend KC, Chair of the Bar Council, offered practical insights into fostering more effective collaborations between barristers and expert witnesses.
Annual Legal Update:
Delivered by Nick Deal, this session provided a detailed review of the year’s key legal changes, equipping attendees with the knowledge to adapt and thrive in their roles.
Lessons from the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC):
Robert Ward CBE KC (Hon) and John Curtis shared lessons learned from investigating potential miscarriages of justice, emphasising the crucial role expert witnesses play in achieving fair outcomes.
The morning sessions concluded with ample time for refreshments, networking, and exploring the exhibition.
Lunch and Parallel Sessions
After a networking lunch, attendees could tailor their experience by choosing from four specialised tracks. I, of course chose to attend the Medico-Legal Session with speakers Michael Mylonas KC and Shivi Nathan. They addressed the nuances of medical negligence and treatment disputes, sharing lessons from high-profile cases.
What resonated profoundly with me was their ability to weave themes of life and death into their discussions, highlighting the profound significance of the expert witness's role.
Afternoon Insights
Post-lunch sessions kept the momentum going with actionable advice and engaging discussions:
Costs Management for Experts:
Chris Butler, a Senior Costs Lawyer, provided practical tips on budgeting and justifying fees, ensuring experts are fairly compensated for their work.
Bridging the Gap with Solicitors:
In a lively debate titled "Experts are from Mars and Solicitors from Venus", Julian Acratopulo and Haydn Kelly tackled the communication disconnects between experts and solicitors, offering strategies to enhance collaboration.
Closing the Day
The conference ended on a high note with a closing address from Mark Solon, followed by a drinks reception where attendees celebrated the day’s learnings and connections. Certificates were awarded to participants, recognising their commitment to professional development.
